The Right Dog Breeder

There are many different avenues to explore once you've decided to buy a dog. Shelters and dog pounds have many great dogs and puppies available for adoption and you can find both mixed breeds and pure bred dogs. You can find purebred dogs with papers in shelters. You can also buy a dog at a pet shop and you will also find mixed breeds and purebreds in most pet shops. A third way to get a dog is to go to a breeder, but before doing so, it's advisable to research the subject so you can know what to look for in a reputable dog breeder.

If you decide to buy from a breeder, don't assume that all breeders are honest as they aren't. Just because someone decides to breed dogs for a living doesn't automatically make them a dog lover. Some unscrupulous breeders wouldn't think twice about breeding stock from inappropriate parents just to make a quick buck. Disreputable breeders don't screen their breeding stock for potentially tragic hereditary conditions that can manifest themselves in future litters and they don't take the time to properly care for their dogs or socialized them. They may not even vaccinate their pups which could result in unsuspecting customers taking home an adorable pup only to discover it is fatally ill.

Before buying a dog from a breeder you should take the time to ask a few questions. Ask around to see what the breeder's reputation is in the area and try to get a list of past customers to contact and enquire about their experience with the breeder. You shouldn't be embarrassed to interview the breeder to see if they are knowledgeable and honest. Here are a few things you should be aware of when considering buying from a breeder:

1. Have the puppies been socialized?

Puppies that aren't exposed to humans or that haven't been handled by the age of 16 weeks will remain fearful of humans throughout their lives. They will always shy from new situations and people and it will be very hard to bring them out of their proverbial shell so these pups are best avoided. Puppies that haven't been properly socialized will grow up to be very fearful dogs that may never adapt well to new situations. A car ride will scare them, they will be afraid of interacting with dogs as well as humans and they will always lack self confidence.

A reputable breeder will stress the importance of early socialization and he will describe how he socializes his pups and give you some advice about how to socialize your new puppy further. Many dog breeders make it a point to raise their young pups in a home environment to ensure they are housetrained and well behaved in a home environment.

2. Have the puppies been checked by a veterinarian?

An honest and reliable breeder should have no qualms providing you with proof of vaccination and medical records of his stock. Make sure puppies have been vaccinated before buying otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a lot of heartache.

3. Is the breeder reluctant to give you references?

An honest breeder shouldn't have any problem providing you with references of past customers who you can call to see if they were happy with the dogs they purchased from the breeder.

4. Does the breeder specialize in one breed of dog or several?

If the breeder breeds many breeds instead of specializing in one or two breeds, this should raise a red flag. It is best to buy from a breeder who specializes in one breed as this means they are knowledgeable about that particular breed and they should know how to breed for best qualities in the breed.

5. Are the breeder's facilities clean and open to inspection?

Be very wary of breeders that are reluctant to allow you to inspect their facilities. A well run kennel should be clean and orderly and the dogs should seem healthy and happy.

6. Does the place look like a puppy mill?

If the facility feels like a puppy mill leave immediately.

7. What is the condition of the puppies?

The puppies should be clean and active. They should be playful and inquisitive and not afraid of people.

8. Does the breeder have medical records of his stock?

A reputable breeder will have medical records of his dogs and won't have a problem showing them to you. There are many breed specific diseases that you should be aware of and you should check to see if a particular breed you're interested in has been screened for possible hereditary conditions in the breed. The breeder should also be able to provide you with prenatal care documentation which proves he cares about the well being of his dogs.

9. Does the breeder have health certificates?

If he doesn't, this should raise red flags and you should walk away.

10. Is the breeder prepared to give you a guarantee?

A reputable and honest breeder should have no problem providing you with a guarantee.

11. Are you allowed to inspect the dam (mother) of the litter?

Be wary of a breeder who is vague about showing you the puppy's parents, you should see the mother at least to get an idea about how the puppy will look when it reaches adulthood. If the sire (father) isn't on the premises, the breeder should be willing to give you references.

12. Avoid breeders who sell puppies to pet stores.

Reputable breeders care about where their pups go and a breeder who sells his dogs to pet shops obviously doesn't really care where they end up.

Here are a few questions to include in your interview with the breeder:

1. Are his breeding stock certified? Reputable dog breeders screen their breeding stock for breed specific diseases and hereditary conditions before breeding them to rule out possible problems in their offspring. An honest breeder will make sure his breeding stock is certified by a veterinarian. You should also read about the breed you're considering buying to educate yourself about potential genetic conditions you should be aware of.

2. Ask to see the breeder's breeding stock and the puppy's parents to see their size and temperament. This will give you a good idea about what to expect from the puppy as he grows into adulthood.

3. Ask to see medical records that confirm that the puppy has been dewormed, vaccinated and checked by a vet.

4. Inquire if any puppies in the litter were sick and if so what were the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

5. Check to see if the breeder offers a guarantee. How will the breeder compensate you if the puppy has a severe disease? Reputable breeders are used to discussing this subject and won't find it strange or offensive.

6. Request a list of references from previous customers who have purchased puppies from the breeder and call them to see what their experience with the breeder was like.

7. Find out if the breeder has a spay or neuter clause - some breeders require that you neuter or spay your dog.

8. Don't be shy about asking about the family history of a puppy. Ask if the puppy's parents are alive or if they died how old were they? Ask to see the medical history of the pup's parents as this provides you with important information about your future puppy.

9. Find out what he breeder is feeding his puppies. This can help you in making the pup's transition into your home easier and safer. Feeding the same diet the pup is used to reduces the risk of intestinal disturbances, and if you want to change the pup's diet,l you should do so gradually.

10. Ask if the breeder will supply a health certificate issued by a certified veterinarian. Many states also require a certificate of sale so be sure to inquire about that too.

Following these guidelines should help protect you from unscrupulous breeders and help you find the healthiest puppy to bring into your household. Before buying a dog you should check that the breed you're interested in suits your particular lifestyle and do your homework before buying from a breeder.

HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUND

Combining the taut muscles and compact power of the bulldog with the tenacity and aggressiveness of the terrier, some controversial bull terrier breeds have been involved in some highly publicized biting incidents, several involving small children. Working Dog Breeds. The national symbol of England, known for its strength and determination, it has been out of work since bull-baiting went out of fashion in the late 19th century. The American Kennel Club created this dog group to honour what is one of the oldest of dog professions:herding livestock. Scent hounds such as bloodhounds, beagles and foxhounds have historically aided hunters by following the scent trails left by their quarry. Two purebred dogs are sometimes deliberately crossed in hopes of creating a new breed such as the cockapoo, which is one part cocker spaniel, one part poodle. Herding dogs actively round up cattle and sheep with frantic running, eye contact and aggressive barking unlike the livestock guardians that simply stand as a guard. Some dog breeds under this group include American Eskimo Dog, Bichon Frise, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, Finnish Spitz, French, Bulldog, Keeshond, Lhasa Apso, Lowchen, Poodle, Schipperke, Shiba Inu, Tibetan Spaniel, Tibetan Terrier. Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a well-liked family pet. The poodle's opposite may be the bulldog. A retired racer should be tested with small children or other pets, as some of these dogs make a habit of chasing them as they have chased mechanical rabbits in their earlier career. Sometimes produced randomly, but most often planned by breeders, crossbreeds result from the mating or crossing of two dogs with a different but identifiable lineage. These fiery little dynamos would dig up underground dens and burrows while barking furiously, forcing the inhabitants out where hunters awaited. It was created in 1983. This is the catchall group for breeds that did not seem to fit in elsewhere, from the cuddly Bichon Frise, a little too big to be considered a toy, to the striking Dalmatian and the stunning but difficult Chow Chow.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE

When the animals become significantly warmer, either through a change in air temperature or through physical exertion, they secrete even more fluid than usual. Typically, they sport solid grey, brown or black coats, composed of light to dark colour-banded hairs, called agouti, like grey wolves. A lot of information can be garnered from a quick sniff. Canids, including domestic dogs, have 42 teeth, although there are a few exceptions:The bat-eared fox has 48. Staying Cool. Domestic dogs glean both physical and emotional details about one another through their olfactory senses. The bloodhound can follow a four-day-old track using its highly developed sense of smell. Lapping It Up Dogs use their large, spongy tongues like ladles to lap up water. But an absence of sweat glands on the canid's skin forces it to rely on other means. Many canids, both wild and domestic, can scan their environment for sounds using one ear at a time.

West Nile Virus and Dogs

Not only can West Nile Virus be dangerous for humans, but it can affect pets just as much. This infection has already been identified in horses and birds. Luckily, the risk is low for cats and dogs, but it's always best to stay protected.

West Nile Virus is known as an arthropod-borne virus that causes swelling of the brain. This virus is known to be caused by mosquitoes, and other blood hungry insects. This is started by mosquitoes who feed off of infected birds. The mosquitoes that become infected will then transmit the virus to humans and other animals. Of course, the virus can't be transmitted between humans and animals.

Even though the threat of West Nile Virus to pets is small, young dogs can become affected. There have been no serious cases of pets or dogs becoming ill to the virus. Dogs are pretty resistant to developing any exposure to illness of West Nile Virus.

When a dog does become infected, its symptoms are similar to those of an infected horse. These symptoms include depression, decreased appetite, difficulty walking, tremors, abnormal walking, along with many others. If your pet shows any of these signs, be sure to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is no West Nile Virus vaccination for dogs and cats. The only way to prevent this virus from infecting your dog is to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

Here are some tips to seriously consider for West Nile Virus prevention. It's best to keep your dog inside early in the morning and evening hours. This will greater reduce the risk of possible exposure and mosquito bites. Also, prevent your dog from getting into close contact with any dead squirrels or birds that may be affected by the West Nile Virus. Before using mosquito repellent on your dog, make sure it's approved for pets. Some repellents contain a chemical that can bring serious harm to pets. Check the label if you're not sure, or ask your veterinarian for a pet approved insect repellent. Lastly, always make sure your pets are inside when pesticides are being sprayed in your area. These can make your dogs really sick.

When it doubt, always ask your veterinarian. They can always provide you with more information on West Nile Virus, and how you can prevent it. These tips are just the beginning in preventing your dog from this virus. Even though the numbers are high, this information can prove beneficial in the future.

Imagine one summer day, you're playing outside with your dog and he gets bitten by a mosquito. Now, what do you do? You can take him to the vet, but it will cost you. It may even be too late. Your dog could become infected with the West Nile Virus. You'll then wonder what you did wrong.

With these prevention tips in mind, you're able to maximize the risk of infection in your dog. You and your pet can live a happy and carefree summer.

Wireless Dog Fence - Take it With You, and Your Dog Too!

Do you want to keep your dog in your yard without a fence? Does your dog have a problem with digging under your current fence? Do you take your dog with you on hunting or camping trips? Are you interested in an underground dog fence but don't want the hassle of burying the wire? Do you have certain areas in your home which you would like to be off limits to your dog?  If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," you may want to consider the advantages of a wireless dog fence.

Wireless dog fence is a new and popular product in today's electronic world. Purchasing a wireless dog fence is a good option for budget conscious dog owners who need an effective solution to a nearly universal dog owner problem. It will give your dog plenty of freedom to run and play, while at the same time keeping him safe, secure, and well behaved. A wireless dog fence is safe, affordable, and easy to install. It is much cheaper than building a fence, and does not obstruct your view or give your yard an unsightly appearance like a traditional fence can. Wireless dog fences are also available for use inside the home as well as outside, giving you the ability to allow your dog some freedom inside your home while still controlling his boundaries.
Unlike other fences, wireless dog fences are portable. This makes them wonderful for use while traveling, and are especially useful and popular for hunting and camping trips. Lastly, if you already have a fence and your dog is an escape artist, a wireless dog fence can help solve this frustrating problem. With training, your dog will learn that the fence boundary itself is to be respected because the wireless dog fence can be set up within it.

When choosing a wireless dog fence for your dog, keep in mind a few important details. We always recommend that you purchase your system from a reputable manufacturer with a good warranty, for peace of mind right from the start. Examples include Petsafe, Innotek, and Perimeter. Make sure that the system you choose is suitable for the weight of your particular dog. Also, you may want to consider purchasing an additional transmitter which can be used to enlarge the area. A wireless dog fence may not be the right choice for you if your yard is sloped. And you should definitely choose a model that has adjustable correction levels, so that you can personalize the training program for your particular dog.

Once you have purchased and have your wireless dog fence in hand, it should only take a few minutes to install using the instruction manual which will be included. You will place the transmitter either within your home, or possibly in your garage. The transmitter does need to be kept out of the rain. You can then place the wireless dog fence collar on your dog and begin training him; do not neglect this essential part of the process.

Training your dog to respect the boundaries of your new wireless dog fence usually takes a few weeks, but the time period greatly depends on each individual dog. Persistence and consistency in training will pay off. You should always supervise your dog for the initial period after the installation of your wireless dog fence.
You can also place flags to mark the boundaries and use them to show your dog where he is allowed to be.
Keep him on a leash at first, and set the correction level on his collar to the minimal level. Then follow him on the leash, allowing him to explore until he reaches the boundary and receives a mild shock. This shock is very humane and is not designed to harm your dog, but just to get his attention. It is similar to the shock you receive from the carpet when you rub your feet on it. Once your dog receives the correction, pull him back from the boundary and praise him. You can also give treats at first to reinforce your training. Your dog may learn to respect the boundary within one or two times, or it may take a bit longer for him to understand. He will eventually learn, however, and then you will be able to remove the leash. Continue supervising him without the leash for awhile, until you feel very confident in observing him respecting the boundaries of the fence at all times. The method for training a dog to an indoor wireless dog fence is very similar.

A wireless dog fence is an exciting new product in today's modern society, and is worth considering by dog owners as an affordable and effective option. While there is possibly no perfect solution to keeping our dogs safe and contained, today's inventions such as the wireless dog fence keep coming closer with each generation.

Invisible, Wireless & Electric Dog Fences

A dog fence serves mostly as a means for confining your dog to your property. It also allows your dog the freedom to run and play safely and gives you a sense of security that your pet won't run away when you're not looking. If you plan to add a dog to your family, you should definitely plan on investing in a fence as well.

Invisible dog fences, wireless dog fences and electric dog fences are all popular with pet owners these days. The breed and size of your dog will play a role in determining which type of dog fence is the best choice for you, along with your budget.

Wireless dog fences are also known as instant fences. This type of dog fence uses either single or multiple transmitters that produce radio signals that are picked up by the collar worn by your dog. Wireless dog fences can be used either inside the home or outside the home.

As your dog approaches the boundaries that have been established, he will hear a specific beeping sound. If he continues to get closer, he will feel a mild static shock. Many dog owners use this type of dog fence to quickly train their dogs to stay within a "safe" zone.

One great advantage of the wireless dog fence is that it can be installed without disrupting your landscape, so it's quick and relatively easy.

An electric fence is hidden under the ground so it won't obstruct your views, but it will effectively keep your dog confined to your yard. One great advantage of an electric dog fence is that your dog won't be able to chew through, jump over or dig up the fence like he would a traditional wood fence.

An electric fence wire is buried under the ground, surrounding the perimeter of the area in which you'd like your dog confined. It is similar to the invisible dog fence in that your dog is outfitted with a special collar that contains a receiver. The difference is that when your dog gets too close to the perimeter of the area that is fenced off, he will hear a loud beep or tone. As he gets closer and closer, the sound will change in frequency. Eventually, he will learn to return to the safety of his yard. If for some reason your dog does go across the electric wire, he will receive a "correction".

Invisible dog fences are also known as hidden fences. This type of dog fence is ideal for those homeowners who may not, due to zoning restrictions, be permitted to erect a fence around their property. Invisible dog fences are also the perfect choice for those who prefer not to see any fence whatsoever around their home or yard, but still desire to safely confine their dog.

To install an invisible dog fence, an electric wire is run under the ground around the perimeter of the yard, or other space you'd like for your dog to stay. A receiver is placed on the collar of your dog. The underground wire consistently broadcasts a weak signal that will beep as your dog approaches the boundary of the fence. In the case that your dog gets too close to the perimeter, he will receive a mild shock. Most dogs learn very quickly to stay within the perimeter and eventually stop going near the perimeter altogether.

Parvo Virus - Parvo Puppy and Dog Virus

When you get a new puppy or a new adult dog, the most important things you can do for your dog's health is to prevent them from being exposed to illness or diseases.

The Parvo Virus has taken the lives of  so many puppies and adult dogs that it has put a lot of fear in the hearts of dog owners everywhere.  Parvo is an illness that has the ability to take the lives of young puppies, weak dogs and elderly canines.

You don't have to be fearful and there are a few things you can do to help your beloved dog avoid getting parvo.

There are vaccinations that can guard against your dog getting the virus. And that is a very good thing. The problem is you that you cannot give the vaccination to newborn puppies.

It is suggested by most veterinarians that you wait until your puppy is at least 4-6 weeks old because during those first weeks your puppy will be receiving a lot of immunity and strength from its mother. So during those first few weeks of its life your puppy is very much at risk for parvo attack.

Symptoms of parvo can include severe vomiting, high fever and diarrhea that is bloody. It is also possible that your puppy will not show any signs of being sick before they die from it. You may be able to save your dog by getting help from your veterinarian - but often once a dog gets parvo they don't usually survive it.

It is important for your new puppy to get well socialized as you introduce them to their new family and surroundings - however because of the danger of the virus it is important to protect them from contact with other dogs until after they have gone through the full series of vaccinations which usually takes at least 16 weeks.

When the weather is cooler your dog will really benefit from a heated dog house or a warming dog house heater.

Various Myths Regarding Wireless Dog Fences

It is seen that dog owners who are planning for a wireless dog fence hear about a number of myths and mis-beliefs from several people and avoid going for these systems. In fact, a wireless dog fence containment system is one of the best available in the market these days. Following are some of the myths experienced by people and the truth behind them.

All wireless fences are same: This isn't true as each brand has different characteristics and several companies launch different fences within the same brand (which are also different). The variation depends on the dog's size and breed and also the area covered by the fence. Hence, the owner should browse all the 'different' models and buy the one which suits his/her dog.

Wireless fences hurt dogs: The wireless dog fence isn't supposed to hurt the pet. It is designed to prevent any such occurrences which can include getting lost, getting attacked by other animals or getting run over by a car when the dog is roaming outside the property of the house.

Electric and wireless fence are the same: The electric fence can shock any individual who tries to cross the boundary or the perimeter while the wireless one is designed to only zap the entity with the receiver. Moreover, wireless fences come with multi level receivers which can adjust the voltage experienced by the dog.

Some dogs don't adjust to wireless fence: these containment systems have been tried on all sorts of dogs. Whether they are the most stubborn, a large or even small pup, the system corrects every pet wearing the collar. These can also be used on other pets.

Clearing any myths is important while considering the different Dog Fences options as mis-beliefs can keep the dog away from a safer option. PetSafe Instant Fence Wireless Invisible Fence

What is an invisible fence, and when should it be used?

The Instant Fence system was originally designed to be used in RVs. The idea was to give pet owners who already had pets being contained by an wired fence system a portable system to take with them when camping or on vacation. It was never originally intended to be a replacement for the 'underground' (wired) fences. However, because of its 'Plug & Play' functionality, the Instant Fence quickly became a favorite item of pet owners.

Recently the Instant Fence received a significant upgrade. In the past, it only came with a rather large, 1 level receiver collar that was best suited for medium to larger dogs due to its size and strength. PetSafe wisely changed the receiver to an adjustable 6 level collar and reduced its size by 20%. This made this
system much more beneficial, as now pets as small as 8 lbs and as large as 100 lbs or more can be contained by this system.

The Instant Fence and its receiver collar - the PIF-275 are the only PetSafe Invisible Fence items that are not interchangeable with any other PetSafe system. The reason for this is that they work in exactly the opposite way from an 'underground' (wired) system. When activated, the PIF-300 emits a radio signal up to 90 feet in every direction in a perfect circle.

The PIF-275 receiver worn by the pet is always hearing this signal and therefore it does not activate. However once the dog walks out of the zone and the collar loses this signal, that is when the receiver wakes up and begins to correct the pet via stimulation through 2 contact points on the Receiver Collar that touch your pet's neck.

With an underground fence, the only place that the signal exists is around the buried boundary wire. Once the pet walks up to that wire and the receiver hears the signal, it then wakes up and activates.
So with our Instant Fence, the receiver collar needs to always hear the signal; otherwise it activates.
With our 'underground' (wired) systems, the receiver collar never wants to hear the signal; if it does, then it activates.

The two main drawbacks to our Instant Fence are:

1. It has a maximum range of 90 feet in any direction.

2. The boundary shape cannot be adjusted. It can only transmit in a perfect circle in every direction. If you wish to increase the boundary, you may use multiple transmitters and overlap the signal to create a boundary of 180 feet in every direction but keep in mind that the transmitters must be indoors and out of the weather.

Overall the Instant Fence is a great product for someone who needs simple installation and is not concerned with its limited adjustability.

If you are serious about training your little pup, you should consider purchasing the petsafe invisible fence.

The Number 1 American Bull Dog Health Problem

American Bull dogs live long and happy lives when provided with the proper health care, which includes, diet, vaccinations, exercise and grooming. The American Bull dog health problem usually comes from improper health care. The cardiovascular problems along with the joint problem do not affect these smaller dogs as they do the larger dogs. Some studies have suggested that larger dogs have more hormone growth than the smaller, which is believed to shorten the life span.

The number one health problem for this breed of dog is diet. Coming up second in the care of the American Bull dog is the vaccines needed to remain healthy. Because these small dogs need less exercise, the diet needs to reflect the need for less food than a dog that has more exercise needs.

Feeding Your American Bulldog

Some believe that dogs can eat the same foods as what we do; this may result in improper nutrition that is supply by dog food. Because dog food has the necessary nutrition and vitamins needed to maintain a healthy life, food ingredients need to be checked before feeding to your dog. Because a dog's digestive system has fewer problems digesting raw foods rather than cooked foods, dog foods contain additives that attract the dog's attention.

The American Bull dog health problem with food is that they like foods such as oatmeal, cheese, eggs and fresh meats like poultry and beef. Unbelievably they also like fruit and vegetables, but they prefer uncooked foods, but do eat prepared foods, as will any dog. Are the foods that we eat are safe or not for the American Bull dog? This question has many viewpoints from many different veterinarians and breeders. The choice is yours when caring for your dog.

Vaccinations, The Number 2 American Bull Dog Health Problem

Keeping your Bulldog up to date on vaccinations is vital to their health and maintaining a healthy life without disease and even death. Viral diseases affect dogs that receive no vaccinations against such contagious diseases. The vaccinations protect the dogs against distemper, rabies and the parvovirus. In most states, the dogs will also receive heartworm pills to prevent the attack of heartworm.

Before a heartworm treatment is started, the dogs are checked to make sure they do not already have the health problem. If a dog has contacted heartworm already, prevention treatments may kill the dog, therefore, a test by the veterinarian will determine the dog's status. Do not take vaccinations and heartworm treatments into your own hands, a vet is more qualified than you are to diagnose and treat the American Bulldog.

You have a beautiful dog that relies on your care and love to survive, the American Bull dog health problem does not have to be a problem when you take the time to learn about the care and grooming of these dogs. Always remember proper nutrition and exercise along with vaccinations keep your precious Bulldog healthy and happy.

Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog

Breed group: Working

Weight: Males up to 100 lbs, females about 78 lbs

Height: Males 22-25 inches, females 20-23 inches

Overview

The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog has been developed in the Alapaha River region in the southern part of Georgia during the 1800s. At first these dogs have been used as watch and cattle dogs. The Alapaha Blue Blood bulldog is descendent from the original Bulldogs that arrived in the USA from England, similar to the American Bulldog in the 1700s. These dogs have been around for almost three generations - and were used as watchdogs on the plantations. This breed is also known as "Otto" seeing that they descend directly from Buck Lane's bulldog guarding dogs - and especially one with the name of Otto.

Temperament

The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog shows incredible stamina, and they are very supple and physical dogs. They are very strong, but also alert. These dogs have been given the Blue Blood name due to the fact that they have a noble way about them. The Alapaha guard his owner's family and property instinctively, but they are not aggressive dogs. They will however go to great lengths to protect their families. In general the Alapaha gets along well with children and other dogs, but they can attack when they feel threatened. These dogs will only be aggressive when they need to defend themselves or their families; therefore they don't have to be on a chain when they are fenced it. The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is very lively and attentive, and they possess a lot of heart. This breed makes wonderful companion dogs.

Care

The grooming needs of these dogs are not very high, and the coat of the Alapaha requires minimum attention for it to stay in a good condition. These dogs can be brushed occasionally so that dead hairs can be removed - these dogs are average shedding dogs. The Alapaha should not be bathed too often, only once every two weeks.

Training

The Alapaha is a very trainable dog due to its high intelligence, but training should be started at a very young age. They also do extremely well when it comes to obedience training, and have medium problem solving abilities. These dogs are also very easy to housetrain, and will also not have any problems walking on a leash.

Health problems

Because the genetic pool of these dogs is very small, they tend to develop health problems such as entropion which is an in version of the eyelids.

Grooming For the American Bulldog

One of the biggest benefits to owning an American Bulldog is that they are not a demanding breed to groom and do not shed very much. Their fur is short and coarse, and thus they don't require very frequent brushing, though most dogs do enjoy being brushed just for the sensation of it.

If you are lucky enough to have your American Bulldog during puppyhood, this is the ideal time to begin grooming. They are an energetic and muscular breed, and being used to the grooming process will make it a lot easier down the road when they are full-grown and may not want to sit still in a tub full of water!
Even though their coats are not demanding, American Bulldogs still need to be brushed every so often. A soft-bristled brush is the best option, so that their skin doesn't get nicked and the experience is enjoyable, even relaxing, for your dog. Brushes with metal teeth may be too harsh for your bulldog because their coats are so close to the skin. Test the brush out on yourself before using it on your pet to determine whether or not it might hurt. If your bulldog acts like he is irritated or in pain from the brushing, try a softer brush. There are brushing gloves available that can help this process. Brushing gloves are rubber and have little rubber rivets and spikes that can help remove shed hair without any pain. Your dog may even just think you're petting him! Always brush from the head to the rump with the grain of the fur, otherwise brushing can be uncomfortable.

Your American Bulldog will also need to be bathed occasionally. If he is a messy pup that likes to play in the mud or the sand, he will need more frequent bathing than usual. American Bulldog owners should be careful not to bathe their pets too frequently, however, as over-bathing can strip the fur of essential oils and minerals that keep their skin and coat healthy and attractive. One bath every month or two should suffice as long as your bulldog is not getting too dirty during playtime.

The actual bath is a relatively simple process for the American Bulldog, because their coat is short, thin, and coarse. To bathe your bulldog, run a bath with warm water. Bathing by hose outdoors is acceptable if you can control the water temperature and it is warm outside, but it is not advised otherwise. After the dog is thoroughly saturated with warm water, work some shampoo into his or her coat. You can choose from any number of dog shampoos at your local pet store. Your dog and his or her coat may respond more favorably to one shampoo over another, so it is okay to test out various brands and formulas with some trial and error.
Be sure to clean the paws and around the anus, where dirt and bacteria are likely to collect. Once your dog is shampooed, he or she can be immediately rinsed. Make sure you do a thorough job rinsing your dog, as the slightest bit of leftover soap can cause a maddening itch!

Because of their short coats, American Bulldogs can be dried with nothing more than a towel and, if weather permits, a romp outside on a sunny day. With proper training to get your pet used to the process, grooming an American Bulldog is a snap!

But did you know that a dog's loyalty to his master can reach enormous, fascinating levels? Yes, there are dog breeds which are amazingly loyal to their owners.

Or the most dangerous? Or you probably are hoping to own a canine breed which is considered to be one of the most fascinating.
Here, we will take a look at the world's most amazing dog breeds - and describe what is it exactly that makes them so outstanding.

Counting Down the Top 10 Most Amazing Dog Breeds

If you're thinking of a breed of dog to take care of, it is good to have an idea about what its temperament is, its characteristic and what makes it unique. [Owning a Dog]

To help you out, we will have a countdown of the top 10 most amazing dog breeds - ranging from the most dangerous, loyal, fascinating, popular and expensive breeds that you can buy.

1. Doberman Pinscher

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world.

With their tall and compact bodies, dark color and alert ears, it is easy to see why the Doberman Pinscher as a dog breed is considered to be one of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world. Simply referred to as Doberman, this canine breed originated from Germany.

Generally, a domesticated Doberman is loyal, intelligent and alert. If you own this dog breed, they will be particularly loyal to you and aggressive towards strangers. They also do not like rivalry with other dogs.

What makes caring for a Doberman pinscher particularly dangerous is when the owners lack guidance, subject them to abuse or if not enough attention is given to them - upon which they can become destructive, dominant and extremely aggressive. [Dog Behavior]

2. German Shepherd

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world.

Another German breed of dog which is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world is the German Shepherd. Unlike the Dobermans, this breed of canine does not have a particularly menacing look because they have a long coat and a generally mild-looking face.

However, they are extremely intelligent, strong and obedient, which is probably the reason why most police and military establishments employ them as guard dogs. Another characteristic of the German Shepherds which makes them particularly dangerous is their aggression towards smaller dog breeds.

3. Rottweiler

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dogs in the world.

Did you know that Rottweiler is also known as Butcher dog? This canine breed ranks third in our list of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world. They are energetic, intelligent and hardy animals.

The thing which makes Rottweiler - and any dog breed for that matter - become dangerous is when they are subject to abuse and neglect. They also become a hazard to the community if they do not have sufficient training when it comes to mingling with humans or other animals.

In addition, Rottweilers are aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex. If you have cats and birds in the house, they might also exhibit aggressive behavior towards them.

4. Dog Breed: Samoyed

Distinction: One of the most expensive dogs in the world.

Next, we will take a look at a few of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. This 'luxury' dog breed has a price ranging from around $3,000 to $8,000.

What makes the Samoyed breed particularly expensive is the fact that they are among the ancient dog breeds that have been around for the last three centuries.

There are also a dwindling number of Samoyed dog breeders which is another reason why an owner needs to pay an arm and a leg to call this canine breed his or her best friend.

5. English Bulldog or British Bulldog

Distinction: One of the most expensive dogs in the world.

How would you feel about owning a dog breed which is also owned by the British royals? In the United States in particular, English or British bulldogs are both expensive and popular. This breed of dog is also favored by a lot of men who see the breed as being a symbol of masculinity and tenacity.

If you're thinking about a breed of dog to buy and you are willing to shell out the money for it, then you might as well go with one of the most popular and expensive dog breeds in the world - the British or English bulldog. A typical English bulldog puppy can cost you anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.

6. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Distinction: One of the most expensive dogs in the world.

To cap off our list of the most expensive dog breeds, there is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which can cost anywhere from $800 to about $3,500 for a puppy. What makes the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel expensive and special is that they are the ultimate definition of a man's best friend.

When you look at their puppy-dog eyes, their rich coats and their small, compact bodies, it is easy to see why anybody would want to spend a significant amount of money just to be able to own a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy.

7. Labrador Retriever

Distinction: One of the most popular dogs in the world.

Finally, we'll move on to some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. First, there's the Labrador Retriever. They are among the world's most popular dog breeds according to the American Kennel Club because of their friendly demeanor.

Purebred Dog Breeding Today

The breeding of purebred dogs today has become very complex and even in many breeds of dogs there are many different breeding lines that produce different type and traits of dogs within the same breed of dog. This has come about due to breeders personel likes and dislikes of a certain types, sizes or colors but every breeder of purebred dogs needs to remember that breed of dog breed standard. Does your dog have its true breed characteristics? Does your dog appear to look like what its breed books say it should look like? Does it compare to picture of of dogs of its breed of old or of famous dogs bred in its breed? Finally does it have the true temperment for the breed you own? Last but not least is your dog of sound healthy breeding lines?

These are all question any breeder or some one thinking of breeding dog should ask themself before they undertake the job of breeding any litter of puppies in any breed of dog. If you can answer all the questions above and you have done at leat some research in your breed of dog and the bloodlines you are working with and do know what traits your bloodline has, what the sire and dam look like, the grandsire and granddam and further back great sires and dams in your dogs pedigree. The next thing on your mind should be what are you trying to improve on and what are you trying to keep in your breed of dog.

There are three main breeding methods of breeding dogs or purebreds, line breeding, out crossing and inbreeding. There are many good books out there on breeding of dogs and I am not trying to rewirte any of them in this writing, rather I am trying to get you as a breeder of dogs to think, read and questions what you doing and wear you going with your breeding program. I will discuss shortly the three ways of breeding purebred dogs as to only lay fourth a guide to breeding better dogs and keeping some type of constant format to produce dogs that closely look like each other, have the same traits, temperments and are sound healthy dogs. Lets us simply discuss them shortly and see if I can get you thinking and looking at the way you are breeding your dogs.

Lets talk out cross breeding - This type of breeding is seen a lot in dog breeding were none related dogs who are bred out none related stock are bred together and in your dogs pedigree. This type of breeding will not produce good dogs of the same type, quality and soundness. Breeding dogs this way only leads to many uncertain factors and can bring in many things a breeder is unaware of or even make it impossiable to pin point were a trait or problem have come from. Out cross breedings should be done by very experienced breeders only looking to correct a fault or make a certain improvement in there dogs and than the breeder must be sure the dog or bitch they are using carries this trait themself and the line they were bred down from does carry this trait or improvement for at least the last three generations in there line or pedigree for it to have any effect on result in making the desire changes, after this these dogs from the out cross are usually bred back into the main breeding line. Out cross breeding should not be done by new breeders or new comers to any breed and out cross breeding is no way to start a breeding program when trying to produce constant type, temperment and soundness in your dogs. Even long time breeders have made mistakes when out crossing and it is the fastest way to change type, temperment and soundness in any breeding program in any breed of dog. I allways recommend you to educate yourself, know your breed of dog, do some generation research and at leat learn basic genetic knowledge or do some reading before you begin to bred any breed of dog. Also seek the help of other sucessful breeders in your breed of dog that have been around awhile, most good breeders are willing to help and give advice to all novice dog breeders and new comers.

Lets talk about Line Breeding - Line breeding is the breeding of related dogs bred down from a certain breeding line of dogs. Many breeders think line breeding is close breeding of related dogs and it should be avoided. Nothing is farther from the truth. Good line breeding will produce your best dogs who will in return produce even better dogs if done right. Line breeding will give you much higher constant results producing dogs of the same type, size, quality, traits and temperments. That is if the breeder is starting out with everything being good and the line there breeding back into is good with all things they want in there breed of dog. Line breeding will quickly show a breeder just how good the line of dogs they are working with is but line breeding will also show the breeder any faults or problems they may have in there breeding program. There are many formulas for line breeding and these are discuss in many good books on dog breeding, there are differnt degree's of line breeding as well. So it is not my attenion to go inot all these formulas here. However two which have proven very sucessufl to me over the years are when you breed a grand dauther to her dams sire, (i.e. grandsire) this does require some advanced planning and does require both dogs to be of very high quality with all the good traits you want and within there breeds standard. Half borther and half sister breeding with a out cross line in the middle of there pedigree has also proven very good results if the dogs used are of very good quality, sound and have great temperments. Line breeding does require knowledge and research. Its is allways recommended that you due this before any breeding of dogs. Line breeding in most cases will produce you better and higher quality of dogs in any breed as long as you are starting out with very good bred stock of the breed of dog you are trying to breed. Line breeding has been proven by many top breeders and top kennels around the world as one of the best ways to produce better dogs.

Lets talk about Inbreeding - Inbreeding is the very close breeding of line bred stock to each other. Example of this are litter brother to litter sister, Sire to daughter, or mother to son, etc. This type of breeding should never be done by most. Some very expereienced breeders may on occasion pull a inbreeding to set in a trait or type but than the breeding of these dogs down from this point must be used carefully and within the aims for which they were bred for. Inbreeding is only for very knowledgeable long time breeders to even under take as this type of breeding will truely intact the good traits as well as bring out any bad traits or problem to a very high degree. Inbreeding has however produce some very great top quality dogs who have in return produce other very high quality dogs however many inbreedings due results in breeders have to put down many puppies also and it is not for the weak at heart. Inbreeding is not a recommended form of breeding dogs expect in certain very experience breeders programs, usually done one time only for that one purpose.

The breeding of purebred dogs should not be taken lightly, and every breeder should always try to gain as much knowledge as they can on there breed of dog, its type, breed standard, soundness and health not for getting its true temperment. Keeping this in mind and do your reseach as a dog breeder it will insure that you breed better and healthy dogs for many years to come. After all breeding prue bred dogs is a true art form and breeding better dogs should always be you goal. Don't purchase you next dog from just anyone, seek out a good breeder of that breed of dog you want who has been around and breeding for a while. You will be much happier with your puppy purchase and so will your puppy and dog be happier and healthy for many more years to come. Today most good breeder also offer health guarantee's on puppies they sell and good breeders stand behind there dogs because they know what has gone into producing them.

Do you reseach, read about your breed, talk to breeders, you will be glad you did!

GPS Dog Tracking - The Perfect Pet Safety Solution

When your adorable pet, like a dog gets lost, it can create as much of panic and tension in your mind as it is created during the missing of any near and dear ones from your family. After GPS receivers being miniaturized it is now possible to get such a device attached on their collar to have them tracked down when they are missing. More researches are being conducted to improve its qualities and techniques of operation.

Something called a Pet detective can be very useful in saving power from the batteries attached to the collar of the dog. It has an antenna attached to it which helps it receive signals from a very tiny base station. It can work maximally up till a diameter of 300 feet. If the dog is out of this radius of fixed diameter, then this device works with help of GPS satellite and the transmission of signal gets done through a GSM modem to provide information about the location of the dog. The presence of a strobe light makes it visible even from a distance of 100 yards when the device is in the mode of lost pet.

You as an owner will immediately get to know about the status of your lost dog through a mobile message, email or a fax when the charge of the battery is getting low. So that you are not running out of battery the base station acts like a battery charger with 2 rechargeable batteries always at service.

It has been so designed that power conservation is not a very big issue. The small part of the firmware and antenna remains on, while all the other parts are turned off when the unit receives the base signal. This is exactly how power conservation is achieved.

There may be other GPS tracking devices that may not use the modem of a cell phone. Instead they may make use of the MURS band of frequency 154.6 MHz, this means that it can track down the dog within a distance as big as a mile. This also has the advantage that is, you can choose to use this device any where under the sun where it is impossible to find mobile phone network. No additional charges for communication are required to be paid here.

In some devices VHF radio signals are used to transmit the information of the dog. The GPS dog tracker can exactly determine the location, speed and position of the dog to the owner over a colored LCD screen. Some of the efficient dog tracking system can track down three pets at one point of time accurately.

More developments are being done over this area. If you constantly remain in worry when you are out with your little dog, then perhaps you need this device to help you relax a bit.

The battery life will obviously be important so that you can search for your pet should go missing for extended periods without the signal dying away. In addition, it is crucial that the antenna sticks in at right position to maintain connection. Often they can fall down to the neck of the dog and this can lose connection immediately.

It is important that you make sure the collar fits properly onto your animal as well. It is no good getting something that will suffocate your pet as this will be both uncomfortable for them and will lead to them trying to remove it somehow. Before you purchase a collar you should also look into any instructions that come with it so that you understand exactly how to set the whole system up. Without understanding the injections there really is no point in buying the collar at all.

Of course, many people will also consider that price is a crucial factor as well. Different collars will certainly come with different features and as such will be priced differently as well. Spend some time figuring out what features you need and what price you are willing to pay. Then spend time looking for a bargain on the particular collar you need.

You should also make sure you look at some feedback on various collars so that you can understand whether or not they will work in the real world. Talk to people and look on forums and discussion boards for this feedback.
